Hi, everybody!
I'm so sorry I haven't updated in so long--my summer got crazy and then I kind of forgot, and then school started, and then, and then, and then....
Anyways, I thought I'd take a bit and give a quick rundown of the summer and of school so far, and then get back to regular posting on Saturday. I have some (hopefully) thought-provoking topics I'd like to do fairly soon, as well as getting into store of the more painful ones that I promised you at the very beginning.
My summer was pretty good, just very busy. I was supposed to fulfill one of my internship requirements, and I had made all the flight arrangements and everything else. And then the weeks before I was supposed to go out there, they canceled on me. (Note to anyone who has a business or will have one someday: don't do that to people. It's not nice.) So that was frustrating, because now I had to cancel all the flights, and disappoint friends who were looking forward to seeing me...not fun.
On the upside, that freed up a rather large chunk of my summer. Which was a gir thing, because between the things that I had planned and the things that I DIDN'T have planned but happened anyway, my summer was already going to be pretty busy.
The first major thing on my plate was a surprise party for my parents 25th anniversary. That went really well, except for the fact that, since it was a surprise party and neither of them knew about it, they each made other plans. The person who was supposed to be distracting my father managed to corral him in so that he made it on time, but my mother was half an hour late to her own party. The only reason she came home when she did was because I shamelessly threw my poor sisters under the bus and told her that they were acting up and that she was needed at home. I think Dad probably had the best line of the day. When he came home and saw all the people and realized what had happened, he said, "I've been CONSPIRED against!"
After that, I was rather worn out for a while. I hadn't realized just how much work was going to go into getting everything done. The worst part was a few days before the party, when I took over my grandparent's kitchen and made the different kinds of cookies, for a total of nine dozen. By the time I got home, I was exhausted, but I still had to do the laundry. I couldn't use making nine dozen cookies as an excuse for why I should get a break for that day, because that would have tipped off my parents that something was up.
The next big thing of the summer was the discovery of weevils in the pantry cupboard in the garage. We have no idea how they got in, but we had to throw out every single flour-based food product in that pantry, wash all dishes in there, sweep very carefully all over the garage to try to flush out any more hiding elsewhere, etc. We use that pantry for unopened cans and bottles of food now. The flour foods we have now go in the other pantry out there, and it's far enough away that any remaining bugs didn't figure it out before they died of starvation.
The THIRD big thing that happened during the summer was that I stained my rotator cuff. One of the downsides to being flexible is that your muscles are very weak. In my case, my shoulder muscles are so flexible and so weak that the orthopaedist who looked at me said that he could dislocate my shoulder "ridiculously easily." (My legs seem to be fine for the most part, due to many years of ballet.) So I had to be off work for the rest of the week, and now I have strengthening exercises to do every day (though I have been very bad about doing then that often...oops).
So yes, my summer was very busy. Then it was time for me to go back to school. This year, for the first time, I'm living off campus. It's been a ton of fun, and I love it a lot, but it's been busy, too. For one thing, I'm about a half hour away from campus. On a good day. Rush hour makes it take a lot longer than that. For another thing, now I have to make my own food. This has been very good for me, because I can eat more healthy food, and because I can make things I like to eat, and it costs less, even though it's healthy! On the other hand, now I have to plan my meals, make out a list, go shopping, and make the food. I think I've done well so far.
In terms of coursework, I have a lot of writing and some reading, but nothing too extreme. It helps a lot that I'm mostly taking classes that apply toward my major. The only non-major class that I'm taking is an elective, so all of then are classes that I'm interested in, and most that I already know at least a little bit about.
I'm excited to be almost done with school, but nervous too. I know where I want to end up in the long run, but I don't really know what the next step will be in getting there. I just have to trust that God will show me the next thing as it comes up, and wait for his timing. But, as most of you may know by now, patience and trust aren't really my strong points. I wonder if that may be why He gives me so many opportunities to practice... :)
